Game thread - @ VCU Tuesday 1/27 7pm CBS Sports Network

Disagree, it was embarrassing.

VCU had multiple times where they missed 10 or more FGs in a row. Had a stretch where they didn't make a FG for like 9 minutes.

Yet, we were never a threat to win, even against that type of opponent performance.

That's embarrassing. Don't lower the bar. Offense was crap except for Walz and Lopez shot making. Defense was horrible, blow bys, easy hoops starting with the first two baskets of the game. "That's too easy" should be written on every announcer's scorecard, to be used multiple times per game.

Bonus embarrassment: Down 6, under 30 seconds and there is no coaching instruction to take a 3? Does anyone on the staff have any clue of situational awareness?

Double Bonus embarrassment: the game was tied the first 25 seconds until VCU scored and then VCU led the next 39:35, despite playing a thoroughly uninspired game.

Alright I’m not content now

You shouldn't be. Anyone who takes a moral victory from this is delusional.

What do terrible defensive teams do? They foul a lot. They get beat off the dribble and leave shooters wide open.

How many points were generated from the weave? Versus generated from individual play like Lopez drives or Walz post ups, or Daughtry post ups/put backs, that were 100% just 1v1 moves?

Great play to open the 2nd half for a wide open 3 - because it was a freaking designed play and not the weave. Zero other designed plays that I saw.

VCU tried to give this game away, many times. We got within 6.

9-28.

Wow Spiders are putting up a great fight. Mooney is doing an amazing job keeping the games close against a superior team.
Damn its soooooo hard to win on the road.
What an inspiring effort, almost made the comback. Mooney should get credit.

I think the adjective I would use is disappointing. A decent coach with the same players would have been able to win in the Siegel Center. VCU went cold and UR somehow matched them although at slightly different times.

Like Lappas was saying if Richmond had managed to win, they would have stolen it because they sure didn’t play well. It was simply a bad basketball game all around.

On the positive side, Walz played a good game even with his limited mobility. Lopez did his usual scoring. Daughtry also contributed. Aiden came on at the end of the game.

But alas we also had a group of no shows two of which were shown the bench and one who managed to stay in the game I guess because he didn’t make any glaring mistakes. Actually surprised the game was somewhat close at the end because the overall contributions were really lacking.

It is the mental part of the game that these CM teams lack. No focus, drive nor heart. Disappointing as well as sad.

Fair, I was mostly commenting that we were within 4 at a minute to go. How we got there is of course highly relevant, as is that we couldn’t ever get ahead.

They stink. We are a decomposing body.

The atmosphere was blah. Neither team seemed to want to win that badly. Just another meaningless game all around. Men's lax hosts the #1 team in the nation this weekend, at least.

VCU 6 minute period in 1st half where they scored 2 points. When they finally got a layup to break the drought, the lead was exactly the same as it was at the beginning of the drought.

VCU 9+ minutes no FGs in 2nd half, from 13+ minute mark to 3+ minute mark. UR cut lead from 17 to 10 during that period. 7 whole points.

UR shot 16 mid range 2s and 15 3 point FGA on the game. This is not a way to win.

The offense in the halfcourt is terrible. Multiple shot clock violations, several more last-ditch FGA at the end of the clock too. Even the shots that were made were incredibly difficult and not good looks, like most of Walz's tough fadeaways from 10+ feet, Johnston made a 18 foot floater to beat the clock, and Lopez made a 30 foot 3, also to beat the clock. Those were the types of things happening. Zero actions worked via the high post play.

The defense...at this point we know we won't stop anyone. It's just plain bad.

Call it what you want. 21 years.

The only comment I have about this game is that it made me appreciate Bob and Scott. These announcers made something I was already not interested in watching even more dreadful. Whoever creates the mute button for announcers but leaves the crowd noise will be a billionaire.

We can all agree at least we are not Loyola. That's what happens when there is a bad coach and the team quits on the coach.

VCU isn't that good. We need to find ways to not get to such slow starts. I think we take them at home on Valentine's day.

It’s certainly possible but it’s also just as possible that they won’t bring their C game again the next time we tilt.

But god I hope we don’t lose to them at home.
