Not the ladies best today for sure. But its a sign of a good team to still win fairly easily without your best game, on the road in a rivalry game in front of a big crowd. Kudos to Allie who really stepped up today.
That all said, I don't think Coach will be too happy about today. While we are no doubt a better team right now than we were in the beginning of the year as the Coach said we would be, there are some lingering issues that need to get better and the more time passes, the more I get concerned that "what you see is what you get".
Most notably here is Simon who just can't seem to get rolling with any sort of consistency. I think Coach moved her into the starting group to try and help get her going, but it hasn't really changed much (except Dewey actually seems to have played better off the bench). Offensively, her shooting appears to be rounding into shape after the very slow start, but she is having problems really integrating into the offense. Part of that is its actually much harder to integrate as the 4th or 5th option and part is that I don't think her skillset and this offense are the best match. But the real concern I have is that she hasn't been able to find a way to fit in and contribute in other ways consistently. Today is a great example. Picked up 4-5 extra minutes due to Maggie's foul trouble and she shot it well enough today, but the rest of her line was pretty non-existent (1 rebound and nothing else) except for 5 turnovers. The turnovers don't actually concern me too much because lots of things can contribute to an individual player being credited with a turnover that's not really their fault and she hasn't really been a turnover problem, but her rebounding continues to perplex me as to why she hasn't been the same rebounder she was at SLU and her defense is very inconsistent. We need her to be better to be all we hope to be, but the more time that passes without seeing too much changing, the more i start to think that this is all there is to get from her.
The other one is Newell. She is and has been solid on defense and her offensive numbers actually look ok, but her offense really all comes off her defense. When we settle into the half court game, she is struggling a bit. She struggles to finish at the basket some and her shooting just isn't a strength of her game.
Add in Persichetti has been pretty stagnant after her super start and Wright is sort of like Newell where her defense is well ahead of her offense at this point and I just don't know if we are going to get enough support for the Big 3 to make the kind of noise as last year. Right now only Dewey seems to be really stepping up and into a role. What made us so good last year was that no matter who we had on the floor, we had 5 players who could really make impactful two-way contributions to the team. Budnick was a stud defensively and solid enough on offense, while Hill was was more than adequate at both a was a leader in toughness. Even Jiminez brought a ton with her defense and just enough offense to support the main cogs. And Camden, while more an offensive player than defensive could play enough D to hold her own. This years group is just not the same two-way players. Newell is probably better defensively than any on last years non-Big 3 group(and I count Budnick as part of last years Big 3), but she probably isn't as good offensively (especially in the half court) as any of last years rotational players. This is a concern because all that two-way play and toughness is what made us so hard to deal with as a team. I thought we'd get back closer to this as the season wore on, but we haven't come along as much as I thought or as I'd like to see.
