Game Thread - VCU @RC Sat 2/14 6PM CBS Sports Network

Ever since we beat St. Joe's to clinch a tie for the regular season title a few years ago, and celebrated like we had won the NCAA championship, the program has been in a total freefall.
Agree, Mooney exhaled and led us right into the toilet bowl. We all called it going into the Mason game. Sdad said the players were ready for that one as well. But the let down was massive and carried into the A10 tournament.

Does anyone have a talley of our A10 record since we cut the nets down for that share of the regular season championship a couple of years ago? It's not good, I'm sure

1-16 in Q1 and Q2 over last 17. Unreal. That's low level results. We're basically a buy game without getting paid.
22-21 in Q3 and Q4 games - somehow this feels even worse than the Q1/2 number.

Sure sounds like the terrific stability that our new poster told us Moon has brought these last 21 years!
20-21, one site was using mt olive and fl tech as D1…

Serious question cause I have doubts - Do Hardt & PQ actually look at things like that, or do they just hobnob with CM at The Tavern?

Perhaps the most damning thing when reflecting on another VCU loss and the past couple of seasons. I miss reading the game threads, whether win or loss, where we had real opinions on game strategy, coaching decisions, particular plays etc. to talk about. We've become so numb by the general malaise of the program and negative direction we are headed that there's nothing substantive to take away from yet another loss. There's no momentum building for next season, hope to turn things around this season (which we've known for 2 months), etc.

I looked around last night at the game at roughly 1000 empty seats and thought, surely the admin is seeing the same thing I am?! Even in the past during really bad seasons, it would be packed with an energetic fanbase. Now, the school has driven away too many fans by putting up with mediocre results while simultaneously letting the red sweater vest crew be the dominant voice of the fanbase... or atleast the only ones they listen to. Also, for whatever reason, the in game experience this season has been lacking. They hardly played any type of hype music at the game whereas in past seasons, they would try to blast some music to get the fans and team going.

But coach is thrilled with the second half, whoopee!!

This is a post game quote from 2007 - it’s like Groundhog Day here in Richmond hoopsland.

The effort was good in the second half, but not as good in the first half. We have to find out what it takes to have it be there in both halves. That's on myself, that's on my staff, the players, to make us ready to play.

and from the Davidson game this season? When does this become not acceptable?

Obviously I'm very disappointed in our entire game today. Our effort, our energy level — which had been strengths of this team — was just nowhere to be found," said Spiders coach Chris Mooney. "I don't think the coaches, we didn't have our team prepared. Our players I don't think played with as much energy and effort as we needed to. I thought Davidson played great. Part of that is we allowedDavidson to play great. We were not aggressive, not energized, and paid a big price for it."
From VCU last year

If you played one minute or 20 minutes, everybody has a responsibility," said Mooney. "Every coach has a responsibility. What could we have done to better prepare ourselves?

Here's an idea to engage the team early.

Stop running the weave/moonball the first 4 minutes every game. Play fast and aggressive. Start Aiden, the player who brings the most energy and aggressiveness to offense. Maybe start the game pressing. Run out on misses and let guys fire 3s in transition/secondary transition. Push pace. Take control of tempo. Let the guys play free and fast, with confidence.

This is not brain surgery. It's mostly the offense that is turgid bc our halfcourt sets are repetitive and unsuccessful with multiple non-threatening passes for 20 seconds.

Lets cut to the chase.

Interesting to sort through yet another cross town rivalry loss thread discussion. Simple, this guy is not, and has never been, a realistic successor to Tarrant, Beilein, even old Jer. Should have been gone a decade ago.

Been propped up by big money and influence for years. now rather than ponying up more too protect him, they whine about being outspent. You created this cluster f that lifelong die hard fans have suffered through for years. Buy him a team he can't screw up or send him packing, please.

Hello Spider fans! Was at the game last night with Mrs Ram Bal and 4 others. Great atmosphere - thought the Spiders were going to pull out a win in the second half. Crowd was into it and the Rams were lackadaisical with that lead. Waltz should have taken it more inside - he is a force down under. Our guys jacked too many threes. Saw several friends who are Spiders including the infamous @Billywayne and his lovely wife Linda. It was bad luck for me to talk with him at half time as our team just did not have the intensity in the 2nd half. We had great seats in Section 18 - Mr Grumpy pants who I thought was Ulla, sat in front of us and complained about us the whole game. There were 3 young gents a few rows down who were rabid Spider fans and gave us hell the whole game - weirdly it made it fun! But with 2 to go - they packed up and left - why not stay to the end? My only complaint about Mooney was the tech - thought it was silly - but maybe it did fire up the team. Anyway, fun night - damn I always forget parking and getting out is a bear. Drove the Volvo so fit in perfectly with the wine and cheese crowd. Beautiful campus in Henrico, and amazing arena. Y’all are fortunate. ~Ram Bal

Read the best non-sensical comment on the Spider Gang FB page. Mooney is the best coach for UR because he is the best coach UR can keep. Don’t want to get a better coach (like Beilein) because he wouldn’t be around long and the administration would have to find another great coach. It is just too hard to be a consistent contender in the A10. Oh and don’t keep complaining as the guys are doing the best they can.

Sounds like a team everyone wants to invest in.

Yep, this is the BS stuff that our admin and "REAL FANS" spew. OMG, would have to do a coach search and then start another era of optimism. It is so much easier to be mediocre and win one or two big games every 3-5 years and bitch about the message board a-holes and the urban dummies down the road. Getting harder and harder to be a Spider fan.

sounds like spider true is posting both here and there. That’s the stability argument again, like somehow we can’t have nice things if we change course.

Again, I’ll take chaos, this stability is killing all interest I have in being a fan.

The most shocking thing is that our high demand coach, for the 279th power conference opening in a row, is not being mentioned for the opening. So lucky he keeps on staying.
