Game Thread - @ Loyola Sat Feb 28 4pm EST - CBS Sport Network

I asked Chat GPT what that pressure would like and this is what it’s said. Looks like Chat GPT has been reading the forum 🤣

Good question. When I say “real pressure attached” for Chris Mooney at University of Richmond, I mean specific, measurable expectations — not vague “do better” talk.

Here’s what that would look like:

1️⃣ Clear Win Threshold
  • 20+ wins minimum.
  • Top 4 finish in the Atlantic 10 (double-bye territory).
  • No more bottom-half league finishes
At Richmond, you don’t need to dominate every year — but you should consistently be in the top tier of the A-10.

2️⃣ Postseason Standard

  • At minimum: NIT-level season.
  • Real goal: NCAA bubble contention entering March.
Going 16–16 and saying “we were competitive” shouldn’t be acceptable at this stage of his tenure.

3️⃣ Offensive Identity Improvement

One of the biggest fan frustrations is stagnation. I’d expect:
  • More pace flexibility.
  • Better late-game offense.
  • Development of players who look clearly better year to year.
If the offense again ranks middle-to-bottom of the league in efficiency, that’s a red flag.

4️⃣ Recruiting / Portal Adaptation

College basketball is different now.
  • Can Richmond land impact portal guys?
  • Are they retaining key players?
  • Does the roster look modern and athletic enough?
You don’t need top-100 classes — but you can’t look slow and undersized every season.

5️⃣ Energy Around the Program

This matters.
  • Is attendance improving?
  • Is there buzz?
  • Do players look bought in?
After 20 years, staleness becomes a real thing.

The Bottom Line

The “pressure” wouldn’t be emotional — it would be structural:

If Richmond finishes middle-of-the-pack again with no postseason and no clear upward trajectory, then it’s time.

But if they’re top 4 in the A-10 and playing meaningful March games? Then you ride with him.
Sounds akin to most businesses plans that I wrote during my working career. Fundamentals picked up during my years at the SBA at UR. Baffling that the administration doesn't practice what it preaches. Absolutely NO ACCOUNTABILITY among the entire bunch. I've been doing great in the stock market with the money that I haven't been contributing to this train wreck.

ChatGPT is a good tool for many things. For those of us who have watched Spider Basketball for the last 21 years, all one needs is a good set of eyes, ears, and fundamental knowledge of basketball to know how weak our program is and not getting better.

Thank goodness for acceptance of mediocrity and complacency by our leaders. Here’s to 3 more years of the same.👎

Mooney said we needed to shoot 3s better. We were 8-32. I love the 3 point shot, but that seems like a lot of attempted 3s against a 6 win team. But, Loyola was only 5-16 from 3. 3s did not cost us the game. 2s did. We were 9-25 from 2 ( my guess is way too many mid range 2s) and Loyola was 17-28 from 2.

But, I guess Mooney will ignore all that and just blame our 3 pt shooting.
If not hitting the 3s, most teams will drive the ball inside and work the boards even harder. They will not abandon the 3, but they will add new options.

I just noticed the box score after u said this. 6 minutes??? He only played 6 minutes because of 2 fouls??? U get 5!!!!! Unreal!!!!
This is another silly item from the basketball gospel according to Moon. Thou shalt not play with 2 first half fouls! Period. The end. Doesn't matter the player, the game context etc. Just no! He is 341st in the country in two foul participation. He was 357th last year. And the same back as far as you'd like to go. From the same list of commandments as Thou shalt not offensive rebound. Never reconsider your coaching theories; don't evolve; don't change; don't question why you are such an outlier every year! Just be sure and tell everyone how hard it is to win, to schedule, to recruit etc. and how its got nothing to do with you or your philosophies - - its just because NIL is here now and you are handicapped so very much by your pathetic NIL allowance etc. And oh yeah, that's not your fault either because because past record etc. doesn't impact current support etc.

But I am past blaming him (well sorta). He is what he is and always has been. The AD and admin in general are pathetic in their excuse making etc and lack of accountability as he has literally run the program into the ground!! A once proud program is now a steaming hunk of ___ and no one has an ounce of accountability. Not even to blame someone else for god's sake. Top to bottom its far worse than I ever could have imagined it could ever be allowed to get. That Mooney wasn't left in Chicago is a disgrace! That it got to this point at all is an even bigger disgrace.

I heard him on an interview say that he was re-thinking his No offensive rebounds coaching philosophy after watching how effective Florida was and how much energy it provided Florida, and deflating to the other team. This after 20 SEASONS!! Let me evaluate this now, after 20 seasons. Unbelievable. He sure as heck is one of the slower adapting coaches out there - especially when there has been a down trend for YEARS. Like the switching defense. That worked great for a few years in the A10. Then it worked terrible for years, but I guess he was busy in the offseason to actually evaluate something like the defense or rebounding.

Now as far as I know Daughtry is an upstanding and fine student athlete and representative of the university.

Funny though, I don't recall Dwill ever getting benched for missing or late to a meeting or walk through though.

But no details, could have been like mentioned - had his own room - fell asleep before setting his phone alarm - something like that.

A valiant effort to nearly come back and win the game in the face of so much adversity. We’re talking about a conference road game in a hostile environment, down a key player due to a season ending injury, and without another key piece because Coach Mooney chose to hold him accountable for being late for a team meeting. That is 15 points per game combined that we were missing. Rip on him all you want but you have to admire his standards. Twenty years in, the coach has earned the benefit of understanding the bigger picture. Protecting culture and discipline in February is more important than squeezing out one ugly win in March. You can’t preach accountability for two decades and suddenly ignore it because the opponent is in last place.

Was it a tough loss? Sure. But short-handed on the road, chemistry disrupted, and still competing isn’t some program collapse. Beyond that, many of you were hoping and praying for a loss anyway and then when you manifested it have proceeded to complain about said loss. Makes no sense to me.
Im sorry, but you’re just pandering at this point. LoyChi is a bad team and did everything they could to give us this game. If you can’t acknowledge what a bad loss this is then you’re part of the problem.

I know it has been noted but if you didn't watch the game, you truly couldn't appreciate how bad Loyola Chicago is, how bad they tried to give the game away to us after silly foul after silly foul and yet despite all of this, we still lost. Loyola could have just called a time out and literally said looks guys, just don't foul these jokers and we win by a dozen.

Loyola was forced to finish the game with a walk-on point guard, who looked like he should be suiting up for a high school JV team, he shoot 46% from the FT line, 16% from 3 and he was their primary PG for most of the entire second half.

Completely effing pathetic. And what is really sad, our two leading scorers in this game, literally the only 2 guys who could score a bucket against this bad news bears team, are graduating.

Did we try to pressure this walk on PG?
