Game Thread - Davidson @ RC Sat 1/31 4:30 PM (USA Network)

This is what you get when mediocre is acceptable ( except this isn’t even mediocre).
I think the announcers are embarrassed for what they are seeing. No offensive plan, no inside presence. Our wins are all fool’s gold. The saddest part is that no amount of losing is going to change things, as evidenced by 21 seasons of 54%.
But, but, but we racked up 10 wins OOC. Feather in CM’s hat for such an accomplishment.

I watched the last few minutes just for the heck of it. In case some of u didn't see it, a walk on who looked like Ollie from Hoosiers drilled a 3 and their bench went crazy, as they should. And, this didn't even happen on their court. And, this wasn't even a top of the league team like SLU that did that against us. This was a 4-4 A-10 coming in Davidson team who did that on our own court. How low can we go?

If your team is clanking 3's at an alarming rate And the other team takes out their two big guys, how do you go the majority of the first half without trying to get the ball inside to walz who should have been camping under there? The Moon Man just has no idea what to do if the weave and hoist a three offense isn't working. Never heard a coach on a post game show who is completely unable to explain what happened and how after plan A failed he was willing to try plan B. (as if there were a plan B). Team did not shoot well but I don't blame them for not trying something different when they are never given another option to try. I actually believe that that is what the nonconfrence games are for.

I’m just going based on what I hear from his press conferences… all he does is whine about how nobody will play us, how out of control the portal and transfer process is, how Richmond is trying to do things the old fashioned way, etc. etc. I could see him using that as his reasoning for walking away.

Trust me, I’m as unhappy as anyone about how bad the last few years have been. Not giving him any excuses. It’s clear we’ve been unable to recruit A10 level talent/athleticism since Quinn/Bigelow/King. It’s completely unacceptable.
He should walk away

All the way to the bank smiling. He has milked UR more than enough.
I don't think he is smiling - I think he is crazy pained by all of this like most of us all. And I don't blame him for taking extension after extension since who doesn't like to get paid big $$$$ so the best approach that UR needs to give him a soft landing ... there are many options

I think this is the best option for all parties. We will never “fire” him or even word it in a way that implies we are terminating his employment. He’s been here 21 years and it’s out of respect and I agree with that. I agree with you that Mooney does care and it’s bothering him too. However, it’s obvious, even to coach Mooney at this point, that he simply can’t do this job well enough in this new college landscape.I just hope he has enough self-awareness to recognize this, which can make the transition easier for everyone. Continuing on will only diminish is tenure here more.

We can word it as a “mutual decision” “retirement” or Mooney choosing to step down on his own terms, or something along those lines.

What makes this even worse for me is that even if he did make this adjustment, he simply hasn’t recruited the right players to implement it. Walz, even after 4 years in the program/system, has no inside/post game to speak of. Both he and Mooney have admitted multiple times that he’s more comfortable on the perimeter than trying to get a bucket down low. While I love J-Rob’s athleticism, he isn’t tall enough to be effective at the center position against A10 competition. Daughtry has really struggled to score inside in A10 play as well. Beagle is our best inside threat, but he hasn’t been nearly consistent enough over his tenure to be a reliable option for us.

The lack of a capable center/forward who can be a consistent scoring threat has been our biggest issue in my eyes the last two years.

To spend more time with the family is the usual polite exit line.

6,123 announced attendance. Not all of those people were in the building but I think it was over 5700 at least. My wife and I were 2 of those people and got treated to one of the worst first halves for UR in the modern era (ie post shot clock).

From Gemini:

In the modern era, the Spiders have occasionally dipped into the teens during particularly defensive or cold-shooting stretches:

• 12 Points: On December 5, 2012, Richmond scored just 12 points in the first half against Old Dominion. They trailed 23–12 at the break but actually rallied to win the game 45–38.

• 15 Points: On March 2, 1985, Richmond managed only 15 points in the first half against William & Mary (trailing 15–23). They went on to lose that game 52–36.

• 18 Points: This occurs more frequently; for example, they were held to 18 points in the first half against St. Bonaventure in 2016 and George Washington in 2021.

Hard to believe there was 1 Mooney coached game that was worse, but this one is the WORST LOSS. Very ironic that it was loss #300 as well.

The crowd showed up but the team did not. It was a “nationally televised game” (USA) versus a peer institution that plays “the right way” according to past Mooney interviews. How in the world do you not have a prepared team? This week is a “bye week” did the team once again check out prematurely like typically happens before Christmas break? This team played like it was the preseason and they were just getting used to all the new teammates.

Disgusting with a capital D and if UR really cares about Men’s Basketball there has to at least be a statement from the AD. Will there be? Probably not because I think the season to date already shows they don’t care. The OOC schedule was a joke and they tried to sell the historical number of home games. The halftime shows have had no investment all year. The marketing is non existent with no giveaways during the game. Even the old standbys of the ball cannon a t-shirt tosses are gone.

What can a regular fan do? The only POSITIVE thing you can do is show up for the Women’s games. Roussell is challenging his team and the players are responding. One of the program all time greats is playing her last year. It is a team UR should be very proud of and support. It is a team that should be the model for the Men’s team.

I really feel sorry for the old timers on this board. I was just a kid in the 80s when Richmond basketball started to put itself on the map. It once aspired for greatness and now it is just going through the motions. What a waste.
