Walk-on
Most uninspired performance I've seen in my life - any sport, any team.
Hating what it has become is the lamest excuse in history for basically quitting. Quit on the university who has dome much for him and showed him incredible loyalty, quit on the PQ's and others who have supported him and positioned him for success, quit on the adminstrators who were there for him all this time and quit on his players - - certainly this group, but all of the players who built our program including his own guys like TJ, Jacob, Grant etc. And he lacked the character and intestinal fortitude to actually quit and give up his money.I’ve pondered this too, but I don’t see him walking away from $1M+ per year with no real pressure on his job. It’s clear he hates what college basketball has become, but don’t see him walking away any time soon.
Does he really hate what it has become? It was the same a couple years ago when we went 15-3 A-10 with King, Bigs, and Quinn. We don't have close to that level of talent right now. Plenty of talent is out there every year in the portal. And my guess is we have more NIL to spend than most of the A-10, but we can't find impact players who are good, all around players. Plenty of high school talent is still out there too, and we can't land nearly enough of that either.I’ve pondered this too, but I don’t see him walking away from $1M+ per year with no real pressure on his job. VT the recruiting has been very suspect and I dont understand how he continues to fail to recruit players that match his system like good outside shooters. What college basketball has become is our coach not being able to put together even an average, mid tier A-10 roster the past 2 seasons. That is 100% on the coach, and 0% on what college basketball has become. We are now 8-21 in our last 29 A-10 games. Sure, the in game coaching stinks, and when you combine that with rosters the past 2 years that look like a mid tier CAA roster, you get 8-21 A-10.
No question the OOC schedules the past 2 years have played a big part in what we are watching. The lack of talent is obvious, but it is combined with a lack of belief, lack of confidence, and being unprepared to face decent teams. How can anyone be prepared for A-10 play after playing 13 garbage OOC games? How could any player believe and feel good about our program when we have zero, none, not one OOC game to look forward to?Mooney should not be permitted to coach another game. None; zero. Ever again for UR. Period. Our once proud program has been run into the ground and he has no accountability, no remourse, feels no responsibility etc. He believes what he says - - its too hard in todays game for Richmond to compete. He basically quit with the OOC schedule and today he reaps what he sows when his kids quit on him.
Should never have been given the rope to do this much damage to our program and our University. For that the blame rests with PQ, HArdt and others. Shame on one and all!
I’m just going based on what I hear from his press conferences… all he does is whine about how nobody will play us, how out of control the portal and transfer process is, how Richmond is trying to do things the old fashioned way, etc. etc. I could see him using that as his reasoning for walking away.Does he really hate what it has become? We competed at the opening tip and then we didn’t compete anymoreDid we compete?
Suspect is kind..it has been awful since we landed Tyler in 2019.VT the recruiting has been very suspect and I dont understand how he continues to fail to recruit players that match his system like good outside shooters. Hunt, King, Quinn were last group that had the firepower to be successful
I hear u. Trust me, I’m as unhappy as anyone about how bad the last few years have been. Not giving him any excuses. It’s clear we’ve been unable to recruit A10 level talent/athleticism since Quinn/Bigelow/King. It’s completely unacceptable.
I hope and think this year with AA and Will H isn't awful but the last 5 years with only one or 2 exceptions was horrendousSuspect is kind..it has been awful since we landed Tyler in 2019.
Let me amend that to needed to move on years ago. Ah…but here we are…still.15, count them, 15 points and i thought the defense was bad. Mooney needs to move on.
