Developmental Redshirts

I made post about this a while back, but wanted to call it out in it's own thread. At this point, if a player is redshirted, we should never expect them to become a contributor to the program. From my view, we have not had an impactful developmental redshirt since Trey Davis back in 2012-2016. Here's an overview of the developmental redshirts since then:

- McGlothin (transferred after 2 years)
- Robinson (10 MPG, 2.7 PPG)
- Soulis (transferred after 2 years)
- Noyes (transferred after 3 years)
- Nelson (transferred after 2 years)
- Dread (transferred after 2 years)
- Verbinskis (transferred after 3 years)
- Bryce Schneider (transferred after 2 years)
- AJ Ford (transferred after 1 year)

Just an absolutely brutal track record. Doesn't bode well for Richardson or Homenick. One of the biggest reasons we've struggled to win consistently.

And all have, will, or should transfer down. No other A-10 teams wanted these guys. What are we doing?? It's ridiculous. And, it's not only redshirts. We can add guys like Wilson, Smith, Randolph, and Nelson to the list of guys who transferred down. But, sure, let's keep the same coach who keeps bringing these guys in and losing with them.

Wow, crazy track record. Not a fan of redshirts in general in this state of college hoops, but Mooney is about as bad as it gets I would think.

if 15 guys stay healthy on a roster, about 5 aren't going to play. yes, you want your freshmen to be good enough to get time, but if they are then your sophs or juniors weren't good enough. 5 guys regardless of class will look like misses.

our healthy redshirts have never worked out though, lol. so I guess there's not much point in offering them to guys.

Said this in the earlier thread, but Mooney uses the redshirt simply to hide his recruiting misses. Someone needs to step up and say no more.

A couple years ago it was only 13 guys. There have been plenty of years where we should have had more freshmen being good enough to get quality minutes. Just look at the last 2 years. When you go, 5-14 in the A-10, it's hard to say, well, we have 15 guys now, so freshmen won't play. When your team is not that talented, freshmen need to be good enough to be a factor. I agree all freshmen won't always get time, but there is no denying how bad this recruiting stretch has been. It has been alarmingly bad.

Yet the assistants who recruit remain unchanged. Just as much or moreso than Moon himself, these guys have some of the best coaching jobs in America. (strikethrough intentional)
Yep, assistants are nice and cozy and comfortable. Any with coaching ambitions leave pretty quickly, leaving us with the guys that are just following Mooney's plan.

I actually snuck into Hardt's office and did find the blueprint.

The cessation plan is as follows. Mooney is coaching until 2034. At that time Peter will be annointed Head Coach. Gipe will be Associate Head Coach. Boyden will be forced retire. Mooney son 1 will be Assistant coach. Walz assistant coach 2. Mooney son 2 will be video coordinator. Mooney's overall win percentage will be .505, only so many D2/3's you can schedule.

Great analysis MD and I think now really brings into question what is the purpose of redshirting these players. As shown by MD, no one that we’ve redshirted in recent years has developed in a meaningful way to become a contributor for us. In fact, not only that but they’ve transferred to lower competition where they may or not have had more success. So why do we redshirt these guys at this point? Only reasons I can see is a) as a benefit for the player so they don’t lose an eligibility and b) in the off chance they do develop well and can then contribute for us. My counter point to that would be that there’s no guarantee any of those players that do become really good and contribute for us will stay here for 4 years. Also, all I know at this point, is if a player is being developmentally redshirted on a UR team that has gone below .500 and a 5-13 A10 record the past 2 seasons, it likely does not bode well for their basketball future at this school.

backhanded, was not meant as a slight. just that you used to disagree with everyone on Moon, now you agree with the majority, while everyone used to disagree with you on the hoops stuff, and now we all pretty much agree with your points. Lot of shifting opinions on this board the past couple years.

That's the result of 2 years of pathetic scheduling and 2 years of having a pathetic record.
