No way a University that is trying to be Ivy like cheapens their degrees by allowing an athlete in “good standing” to get a degree in one year. I totally agree with this approach. Who cares if other schools are doing it.
We are talking maybe 1 guy every year? Not sure that cheapens the "Ivy League" degree. But, sure, let's just keep going 5-14 in the A-10 and then be proud of the fact we are more like an Ivy League school than other teams.

Agree, kind of like not letting in the guy that went to Xavier didnt cheaper anybody degree. We are talking about the highest paid employees other than Mooney.

Come on VT, 5-14 has nothing to do with UR not getting 1 yr mercenaries. UR can do it the “Ivy way”, just need A10 quality high school recruits. Develop and retain. Roussell knows how to do it on the Women’s side.

Malcolm Bernard. Just another ill advised decision by us. The guy is allowed to play according to the NCAA, yet we deny him. We go 13-5 A-10 and 22-13 overall that year, barely missing the dance. Xavier takes Bernard, he starts and plays 28 mpg for them, and they go to the Elite 8. But, hey, while we were home watching Bernard and Xavier in the Elite 8, at least we could say, "yea, but we are more like an Ivy League school than Xavier, so the joke's on them".

6.6 pts while averaging 28 min/game with Xavier. I am sure he would have had quite the impact on a Mooney coached team.

Big time impact. He started and played 28 mpg on an Elite 8 team!! Do you not remember watching him and Xavier in the dance that year? And he had 15 points ( 3-3 from 3) and 6 boards ( 3 offensive) in the 2 point, sweet 16 win over 2 seeded 32-4 at the time Arizona. But, no, we couldn't use a guy like that.

The question I would ask out loud, is why should the university care if someone comes here for a year and doesn’t get his degree? We’ve had how many players come for 1-2 years and leave without degrees. I don’t see a difference with someone coming to UR as the 4th school in 4 years. First, I would argue now that they’re getting paid, it should lessen the academic restrictions or desire to get a degree even more so. Secondly, the player is technically degree eligible if they chose to stay at UR another year after their basketball eligibility is over. Goose stayed another year to finish his MBA. There was a football player who transferred here from Air Force that played football while getting a UR degree and the beginning of law school. He then finished law school here afterwards.

The choice is up to the student athlete on what they want to get out their UR experience. At the end of the day, if there is a player that we want who will contribute here, unless there’s a serious professionalism issue or egregiously bad academics, we should accept them. Universities want students who will become the next well know politician, journalist, lawyer, doctor, etc. That should be no different than wanting the next best NBA player. We’ve seen what Steph Curry has done for Davidson.

Robinson had nearly as many fouls as points his last 12 games. Yeah, I get it he is insanely athletic and all, but he shots 39% from the FT line, he has zero 3 point shot or jump shot and is too small to play center. Seems like we are trying to hammer a square peg into a round hole in Mooney's offense with him. I'm fine if he goes. I think maybe a team that plays more bully ball might be a better fit for him. He is not a good fit in our scheme.
It's amazing to read Monday-morning QBs & the basketball experts' opinions. Stats don't determine what a player contributes to a game. It would be nice to see some of these experts guarding 6"9"-7-footers & up to 270 pounds at a height of 6'6''.

Nothing 97 said was wrong. JRob made one 3 pointer all year, going 1-5 (20%). He shot 35.9% from the FT line (14-39). Stats alone don't determine what a player contributes, but certain stats matter. Only one made 3 pointer in 316 minutes for a guy 6'6 matters. Like you said, at 6'6 we don't want him banging with bigs all game, which means you want someone at 6'6 to be able to handle the ball some and shoot the 3. I keep saying it, but it is true...he is a tweener. He is very athletic, but I agree with 97 questioning where he fits in a Mooney offense.

I’m a big JRob fan. He definitely was playing out of position for much of the season, I don’t think anyone will deny that, and he did well considering.

I think 97s assessment mostly ignores this reality and is why I’m still interested in his potential. But he definitely has to work on the free throw.

I believe most here love JRob's potential. and while he can so it, ideally we don't want him guarding 6'9"-7 footers. we want a true center doing that while JRob plays to his strengths as a big forward, slasher, lob-threat.

Look, you are obviously a friend or family of JRob, so I get that it may be hard to hear a critique on a message board. This is why most family members/friends don't join the board. But I welcome all to the message board family.

I still like JRob's potential but he did not have a strong end of the season and I still don't see where he fits in our scheme. He is not a 5, yet that is where he ended up playing this year and it did not go well. I didn't see a whole lot of positive contributions from him the last half of the year, if you did point them out. Point out where you think he would fit in our system.

And the well I'd like to see you guard a 6'9 guy retort, come on. I'm in my 50's man, I sure as shit can't be guarding D-1 college basketball players. I've got 2 eyes though, so I can observe and make commentary based on my observations.

Scharnowski is worth a call. has 2 years left. but Mooney is so married to a high post 5, he has to be able to shoot. this guy feels like Beagle, who I like as a player but who wasn't a great fit for Mooney's offense because he can't shoot 3's.

it could work if our shooting big forward (Daughtry) was moved to the high post, but we never do that.
