2025–26 opponent tracking

Seeing several bracketology folks including Lunardi just now indicating that if VCU loses today, it'll likely come down to them, SMU, and Texas for the final two spots. Lunardi thinks San Diego State is even behind Oklahoma and Auburn in the pecking order.

There is definitely something to be said for the late A-10 final and them not wanting to move to much. I recall something similar to that was said back in 2011 when we were facing Dayton in the A-10 final and they were only going to take one of us. Think it was committee chair who admitted as much?

VCU currently projected as an 11-seed with the auto. If Dayton wins the auto, I'm not sure if they can basically just slot Dayton into VCU's spot, in which case it's not really much work to decide whether VCU or someone else gets a First Four spot. Things get more complicated if they need to move Dayton down behind some other teams.
SD St is 9-10 against Q1/Q2. SMU is 9-13 and Texas is 7-13. Texas is only 17-14, played a 321 OOC SOS, beating 6 300 + teams, but will likely get in because they beat Bama and Vandy. Well, geez, they get about 14 chances for good wins in the SEC. They don't belong in. SMU has a very shaky resune. They probably won't, but I wish the committee would show a mid major some love here. Put 23's SD St team in the dance.

A-10 not off to a great start in postseason play.

Liberty never trailed against Mason and led by as many as 15 a couple of times. Mason did tie it up a couple of times in the final few minutes, but couldn't get over the hump and Liberty made their foul shots in the final minute.

Davidson jumped out to an early lead and led Oklahoma State by 10 at the break, but the Cowboys pretty much immediately erased that gap as soon as they came out for the second half. It was tight the rest of the way with some back and forth, but Davidson was unable to get back on top in the final 4 minutes

3/17

A-10 (0–2)
- Liberty 77, Mason 71 (NIT 1st Round)
- Oklahoma State 84, Davidson 80 (NIT 1st Round)

GMU 21-3 before loss to the Spiders, 2-6 after?

Was it that demoralizing?

Sorry, I'm not staying up until 1am for St. Joe's–Colorado State before posting today's summary.

But a couple of wins for the A-10 so far with GW surviving against UVU and Dayton jumping out to a big lead on Bradley and cruising from there.

3/18

A-10 (3–0)
- GW 79, Utah Valley 78 (NIT 1st Round)
- Dayton 80, Bradley 66 (NIT 1st Round)
- St. Joe's 69, Colorado State 64 (NIT 1st Round)

2 very impressive wins for the A-10.

A late night for our one game of the day on the opponent slate. Furman hung with UConn decently well and was only down 5 with about 6 minutes to go, but the Huskies pulled away a bit down the stretch for the double-digit win. Reed for UConn went for 31 points and 27 boards. Furman as a team had 23 rebounds.

Non-conference (0–1)
- UConn 82, Furman 71 (NCAA 1st Round)

The A-10's NCAA run is done with SLU and VCU both falling by wide margins today after hanging in there for a bit. Over in the NIT, Dayton rolls over UNCW to move on to the quarters against the winner of tomorrow's game between Wake and Illinois State, while GW (New Mexico) and St. Joe's (Cal) also have their second-round games tomorrow. If they both manage to win, they'll face each other in the quarters.

3/21

A-10 (1–2)
- Michigan 95, SLU 72 (NCAA 2nd Round)
- Illinois 76, VCU 55 (NCAA 2nd Round)
- Dayton 80, UNCW 61 (NIT 2nd Round)

It took a huge comeback from the Hawks, who were down 16 with ~13 minutes to go, to avoid an 0–2 night for the A-10 in the NIT as GW got pummeled by New Mexico.

Illinois State finished strong to take out Wake, 78–75, so it'll be Dayton vs Illinois State and St. Joe's vs New Mexico in two of Tuesday's quarterfinal games.

3/22

A-10 (1–1)
- New Mexico 86, GW 61 (NIT 2nd Round)
- St. Joe's 76, Cal 75 (NIT 2nd Round)

Four NCAA units, about $1.4M every year from 26-27 through 32-33 for the league to divide.
I believe our league gives 75% to the schools representing the A10 in the tournament.
so SLU and VCU get $525,000 per year for 6 years.
The other 12 schools share the remaining 25% ($350,000). each gets $29,167 per year.

so let's not get too excited about VCU's success.

Remember that the little-guy conferences were shafted in the House settlement, so isn't even some of this amount being held back to pay for the $1 billion the non-P4 conferences are collectively on the hook for?

Believe the A-10 was on the hook for like $3m–$4m per year over 10 years, and it was being withheld from all kinds of NCAA payouts including the Basketball Performance Fund that comes from NCAA units. There was a lot of attention on that BS back in 2024/2025 when the House settlement stuff was going down, but I can't find any recent discussion about how it's affecting this year's NCAA payouts.
