2025–26 opponent tracking

The eye test tells me that we do not stink. At this point I believe we are a candidate for the NIT.
We played a really bad D3 team and two likely at best bottom half D-1 teams at home, one of whom we barely beat. We do look better than last year and we have some young talent and depth, which is nice. We are a long way in my opinion for saying we are good enough to be an NIT candidate. Our first game against a team that MAY be vying for an NIT/NCAA bid is not until January 17, when we play SLU. Until then we play a bunch of crap, which may given us the inflated opinion that we are good, when in fact, the reality is we just have not played anyone good yet.

Agreed. Going to call my shot now though and say W&M will win the CAA. Maybe we just caught them on a good night, but they look like they’ll give CAA teams more than they can handle most nights with that press.

They will have to go throught some decent teams

W and M has talent. They played us a good game. However, they are a team we should be beating on a regular basis. We are in a supposedly better conference, and I think we should be regarded as a better team than them year to year. Maybe I’m overreaching but think we should be a 10 point better team. I checked the other night, and I believe the line favored us by 9.5.

Unfortunately Mooney is the equalizer

Loyola loses another one, beaten handily by Wichita.

ECU barely survives against D-II Elizabeth City State. ECU turned the ball over with 30 seconds left and up one, giving Elizabeth City a final possession to try to win it. Elizabeth City waited until under 10 seconds left to initiate, then got bailed out of a bad setup by a kicked ball with 4.7 seconds left. Elizabeth City had a lane to drive to the hoop, but an ECU player got a hand on the ball and time ran out during the ensuing loose ball scrum.

Charleston Southern had a 5-point lead with a little over 2 minutes to go, but lost to Alabama A&M.

11/13

Non-conference (1–1, 0–1 vs D-I)
- ECU 71, Elizabeth City State (D-II) 70
- Alabama A&M 68, Charleston Southern 64

A-10 (0–1)
- Wichita State 95, Loyola 74

The ECU win has a little less luster. A one point win at home over a D2 team. Come on. Trevor Smith did score 20 for Elizabeth City State.

when did the ECU win have luster?
Well, they are an American squad, so my thinking is they have to be able to get American league caliber recruits, which should be more comparable to our talent level than most of other mid major teams we are playing.

But perhaps, they are the Fordham of that conference.

The American is a shell of its former self. And while they're unlikely to be Fordham-level in it, I'd wager they'll be sub-.500.

W&M looked like they had better players. I'll be surprised if ECU is anywhere near .500
might depend on how many more D2's they loaded up on.

I thought he meant .500 in conference
I did, but I hadn't looked closely at their OOC schedule to get an overall impression. I don't think ECU is overall at a D-II level, so they'll get some wins. You don't have to be a solid team to get some wins in today's American, but I do think they'll be lower-half there. Maybe 7–11 or 8–10 territory? Just a feeling.

Looking at their OOC, even with the tight win over Elizabeth City, I still have to think they'll get wins over Charleston Southern, UMES, Presby, and probably UNCG...those are some truly terrible teams. Buffalo and App State not out of the question either.

We could literally go 11-1 OOC (L to Belmont) and know next to nothing about our team. Not only is the schedule completely lacking in good teams, most all of the OOC games are at home (10 of 12). Even when we are decent, the road is an adventure for us. That result would be the "absolutely no meat on that bone" result. Belmont is perhaps the best team on the OOC schedule and that's on the road, so easy to peg a loss there. About the best you could say for us with that result would be that we had avoided the seemingly annual horrible OOC loss!

See how the William & Mary St. Johns game goes today

Missed getting this posted last night!

As mentioned in the other thread, Geriot and Iona took down Fordham yesterday, while URI cruised past Albany to make it 1–1 for the A-10 on the day.

The non-conference side was a complete washout, as Southern Virginia got destroyed by Roanoke, while Furman got rolled by UNI to fall to 1–3. And as mentioned in the offspring thread, Rodney Rice and USC took down Illinois State with little difficulty.

11/14

Non-conference (0–5, 0–4 vs D-I)
- Roanoke (D-III) 86, Southern Virginia 56
- UNI 70, Furman 54
- USC 87, Illinois State 67
- West Georgia 100, The Citadel 92
- Lindenwood 83, Charleston Southern 77
