We're officially doomed

On this beautiful Sat morning with all Richmond hoops hope gone let’s remember that quote from pretentious Big Hat No Cattle Hardt…

“Men’s basketball is the rising tide that lifts all boats in our athletics REGATTA”

Please confirm SF I got that right. I don’t have the old archives to pull it up.

Thamel, Rothstein, and Goodman now joining in to report Schmidt expected to retire…clearly a negotiated parting. Was being told he was being let go but sounds like they’re going to let him call it a retirement.

Olean Star reporting that relationship between Schmidt and Woj deteriorated as they weren’t on the same page. Woj not bringing in the guys Schmidt wanted and the guys he did bring in weren’t good fits for Schmidt’s system.

I can’t find that Hardt quote, GK, but at least the gist is right.

Hardt could have avoided the question by redirecting to focus on the women, or saying we want to keep the focus on this season and the tournament coming up next week, or just muttering nonsense. Speaking out now shows there's literally no doubt in Hardt's mind that Mooney is the right guy. We could go out and lose our last two games by 70 points each...wouldn't matter one bit.
I don’t even know how to analyze this. To your point, why respond? Season isn’t over, we’re still evaluating, blah blah blah. Confirming yes before you see what happens over the next few games says a ton, which is that you’re perfectly fine with a mostly sad performance.

Came out later than Schmidt could potentially coach if offered in the right spot.

I know you all will laugh at me, and as you maybe able to tell, I've started to sway a bit. I'm not inspired but what i saw this year and have concerns. Based on performance this year there is nothing you can do to justify.

That said--sometimes people struggle to make difficult decisions and most people stray on the side of being good

He's nice, he's under contract, he's not at a stage in his career where he's looking to move (kids in HS/star of basketball team) and unfortunately in today's era of college hoops it's hard for a mid major to be a serious threat/get an at large. Again to VCU they are 24-7 (15-3 in conference) won a few notable games out of conference, won 70% of their road games and maybe if things break right they'll sneak in as at at large (though i do think they can win it in Pittsburgh). With that uphill fight for us/Richmond that easiest thing and path to least resistance is to ride it out and that's what we're doing here.

This "decision" tells us one or more of these realities:
* We don't think the program is capable of more than this
* We don't care about winning
* Hardt gave Mooney an absurd extension and didn't include a lower buyout, and we are unwilling to pay the buyout
* Hardt is incompetent at his job
* Queally has complete authority over this situation and Hardt's hands are tied
* God hates us
All of the above!

Excuses and justification at every turn.

What we’re doing is failing. Let me rephrase - what H, H, Q, and M are doing is failing and driving a basketball program into depths we shouldn’t even be discussing. They are clueless and out of sync with how to administer and put a long term winning program on the court. At least they have each other.

I can honestly say that I just feel very sad. Sad for myself, my son, his Spider friends, and all others who enjoyed Spider basketball over the many years. Mooney has mortally wounded us all and the whole program and there is no reason to have any passion for Spider basketball anymore. Its a part of our lives that is now gone and its sad. I trully hope that all Spider fans abstain from supporting anything that has to do with Spider Basketball. Hardt, Mooney and the ego maniac PQ dont deserve it.

Mark Schmidt steps down, but not Chris Mooney: The worst “coach” in division 1 men’s basketball. A freaking clown, imbecile, and bafoon. But no we get his idiocy for life
Mooney really is all of the things you mention, as well as unscrupulous and spineless. In all of my years of watching sports, he is by far the coach I dislike the most.

From a basketball perspective, I do not understand. In the past, don't we, and pretty much every other school in every sport, say "we'll evaluate/talk about it when the season is over." It made less than zero sense to make this announcement last night. Unless they were hoping it would get lost in the hopeful excitement of success from MLAX and WBB.
