Transfer Portal

The patriot league isn’t related. Patriot league will be better next year than the CAA has been since 2022. It’s a mix of both desire to play ant bigger schools and the players not wanting to play for Huesman. Have you all been to a practice? It’s just an onslaught of negativity. Huesmans def have favorites and if you’re not one of them then you can be out of luck. Haskett didn’t play all season until the last two games. That’s problematic seeing how well he performed. The drop off of playing time for king seems dramatic too. Foster Powell looked good in the second half of the season but he went through a bunch of games average around 1 yard per carry. King may have done well if he was consistently used even through rough games.

I can see a lot of these transfers ending up in Harrisonburg especially with a new HC,new regime and likely a playoff game in ‘25.Ironic that we could become JMU’s farm system.Huesman is probably indifferent to that happening in any case.

If we can keep recruiting the caliber of athletes that we have been in the last few years, I can except and continue to follow and support UR Football. We can not Redshirt them and coach them up for 2 years and reload as they move on. But if we start to recruit lower level talent that can’t move up, then we will be a mid conference team with no playoff hopes and eventually our program will die! 🏈🕷️🕸️
This is my read on the situation. But will we expect to be stuck in the middle of the pack in the Patriot League?

I don’t think Huesman is that good of a coach where he can lead us back to national relevance and deep playoff runs. While he has had success of 3 playoff seasons in a row, prior to this season, I think a large part of that was us playing an easier CAA schedule and avoiding some of the better teams like Villanova, UNH, Rhode Island and benefiting from the CAA reputation, which has now diminished greatly.

Losing Seelmann is huge as he was a heck of a LB with size, speed and fearlessness. Funny thing
about him was that he never seemed comfortable in an interview. I think he has the tools to play for
a P5 school.

I believe there were 14 players listed on the roster as seniors who appeared to have a year of eligibility left. It looks like they’re breaking heavily towards the Portal.

As many have already said, it sucks, but is the reality of college football today. These guys in particular will probably graduate in May. The Portal is the equivalent of a first job. Some may earn decent money while getting a chance to see if they can play at a higher level, or different type program.

Go Spiders!

My thoughts exactly. You have your UR degree and getting to play football and be paid is a bonus. Why wouldn’t a UR player take this option?

If I understand the Patriot league rule on Redshirts, it can only occur from a medical reason? Or the need to extend your time to get a degree? I know when we joined they honored the redshirts that our players had, but what about since we become a member this year?

Don’t know the rule, but obviously that will cut down on the redshirt options so looks like less grad transfers in future. I still think it is a transition type issue here and we will see if W&M and Villanova have similar issues or not.

I had never thought of it as the "first job" for the graduates, so that is helpful thanks. Though in general, I am less annoyed by players transferring after they have graduated. I don't like it, but I understand it.

I don't know the answer on the red-shirt issue, but this is a tough decision. Seelmann is a good example. Local kid that we brought in that did not have the size to go FBS as a LB. Coaches saw his athletic ability and high motor and played him 12 games as a true freshman on special teams and some rotation snaps at LB. He committed to developing strength and added bulk in the off-season and started day one as a true sophomore this year and excelled earning All Patriot League honors. We developed him and gave him a starting role that he earned and both he and our program benefited. Now he hires an agent to shop him around to roll the dice on moving up this year as he only has two years left. We may now lose another year of having him because much like Coleman he will not be able to graduate from UR and also have another year of eligibility where he could transfer to FBS as a graduate student and earn NIL money.

Then you have Dawson who we did red-shirt last year. He gets on the field as a freshman this year and shows big play ability as a small but quick WR and kick returner. He also enters the portal after only one year to look to move up. We can only develop kids at this point and give them an opportunity at playing time at our level and hope that some will give us three to four years before moving on. Their decision is how much do they value playing time, continuity and a UR degree versus what NIL money and promises are dangled in front of them that may not work out long-term.

Of course, there are also ones like the kicker Maryland took after last year.
He was 19 for 21 this year and never missed a PAT. Missed one 30-39 yard one and one 50+

I guess there is a blessing this group of coaches can find guys and develop them, just have to hope we hang on to a few like you mention above.

Can we convince the co-eds they should date rhe top football players? Maybe a tuitiom break while they date.

O'Haire missed a chip shot against Michigan State last weekend that would have tied the game late...Terp fans were not happy about it.

But he was the first-team All-Big Ten kicker, so he clearly did plenty right this season. Guess his agents should be able to demand an even bigger NIL package for next year.
