OT: Coaching Changes

Because that's what leaders do. The ADs at Memphis and Pitt did it this month.

Given the relative dearth of public comment in general from Hardt about anything difficult over the years, it would be a nice change of pace for him to enunciate literally ANYTHING about the future of the program other than celebrating basic things like "hey, a good player is coming back."

I gather you are on the inside, and so maybe you are completely content with the way things are going over there, but the majority of the fanbase is not.

As for what he could say?

I might change my opinion of him if he said something like this:

"This year was the second straight difficult season for our men's basketball program. We understand that our performances have not measured up to the Richmond standard that you, and we, expect. Candidly, I know some of you would like to see a change in leadership. But despite these recent challenges, we are excited to welcome Coach Mooney back next season and here's why: Because I am confident that the implementation of some key changes will help return us to the level of achievement we all desire, and Coach Mooney is the coach to successfully implement these.

Specifically, Coach Mooney and I have discussed the need for additional NIL funding to attract talented players and the need to look at a number of possible changes to our on-court philosophies and style of play. He and his staff are spending the spring evaluating a number of changes and enhancements to ensure that we put the most competitive and talented team on the court this winter."

John Hardt just sent out a 1,290-word email update and managed to avoid mentioning anything about the men's basketball program except for two paragraphs about AA coming back. Impressive gaslighting. It's also been 21 days now with no comment on Mooney's return, why, what will change, or anything else about the program.
21 days. Wait longer 121 days, 221days, 321 days, etc. We got all we’re going to get on defending something that can’t be defended. Don’t know if Hardt just doesn’t give a $hit or if he’s too embarrassed to really try to explain or justify. Either way unacceptable.

There isn't a single thing that Mr. Hardt could say that would settle most of you down anyway so why are you so focused on him addressing anything at all.
I can’t speak for others but if Hardt demonstrated leadership and made clear that at the University of Richmond, basketball remains a priority, these results are unacceptable, and effort is being made to remedy this, I would certainly feel a bit better about our situation.

I don’t understand why he can’t do something that would be so basic for his job. It’s simple. Men’s basketball is our flagship sport and should be our main priority. We have stunk 3 of the past 4 years. The leader of our athletic department should instill confidence to the fans, donors, and community that support the program that this is unacceptable. That’s what leaders do.

Over a decade ago, even Domino’s pizza made a commercial recognizing the criticism they received about their pizza products and made a commercial vocalizing change. If a pizza company is able to do that, so should we.

There are other coaches out there who have this mindset. Young, up-and-coming coaches, motivated, get the importance of instilling a culture of work ethic and high energy. Don’t settle. Guys who have a fire to them. For instance, I think Matt Brauer from SFA is one of them. Richmond just chooses to settle rather than trying to improve themselves.

I wonder what the Richmond culture outline would look like?

Be a nice guy
Just compete
Be leafy
Treat everything challenging as being too hard

I know you’re probably joking as you’re saying that but you’re probably not that far off.

Culture is probably to have a guy who presents well and is personable. Doesn’t rock the boat. We saw Danny Rocco leave after his “lack vision” comments. Instead we need a yes man. Someone who doesn’t tarnish the “university image” in any way. Stays out of the spotlight. Does well enough most years to kick the can down the road. I used to say graduate players but now with the portal that is no longer a requirement. I used to say have good student athletes but only 1 of the 107 student athletes that were honored as scholar’s came from men’s basketball, so apparently that’s not a requirement anymore either. So really, it’s show up, don’t get arrested, and if the coach happens to excel and be great, then that is just the cherry on top but certainly not a requirement.

For a positive comment, congratulations to Mike Walz.
