I truly believe you could give Mooney a 10 mil Nil budget and the results

You’re probably right, but at least by the looks of it we’re showing the financial commitment to be at the top of the A10, which is better than complaining about NIL and doing nothing about it. Unfortunately, we don’t have a coaching staff that anyone feels confident in maximizing this increase in NIL.

I just hope that when we inevitably have another lackluster season next year, our administration will finally run out of excuses and bring in a coach who can make the most of that NIL money.

This feels like a business trip that you have to take every month to a beautiful location but there's only one hotel there. Every time you check in, there are cockroaches in the bed, the last guest's old room service tray in the corner of the room, mold growing in the shower, the smell of cheap air freshener failing to cover up the stale stale stench of it. The TV only gets three channels, there are deadbeats next door arguing until 4 in the morning and you find a used condom at the foot of the bed when you’re going to sleep.

When you complain to the front desk, they look at you funny and offer you a 5% discount on your stay next month and give you the chance to name one of the rats that lives in your room.

You could give Moon the Duke players, and they’d underachieve due to the coaching.

It’s CM - his offensive, defensive, and rebounding strategies as well as in game management. Money won’t fix that.
Absolutely. That’s why the NIL excuse was one of the most ridiculous ones I’ve heard. By all accounts it appears that UR is committed to at least doubling the NIL this next season. That money could’ve help buy out his contract. It’s kind of funny the extents we’ll go to actually act like a real program and show that we’re committed but it’s only out of wanting to defend keeping Mooney as our coach and not because we actually want to be a top program.

Back to back 5-13 seasons in A10. We supposedly spent 2 million this season. How many more conf wins did it give us? Adding more $ next season, and we’ll be back here with similar results next year, Hardt backing his bud CM, and 20 frustrated posters on this site along with a couple Moon trolls kissing his tennis shoes. It’s all good.

The results would bankrupt our athletic department. Louisville is running out of money. I saw this on the football board, courtesy of 32counter. It makes sense to put it here.

I read this last week and thought about posting it, but didn’t get around to it. There is no doubt that the current situation is not sustainable. The football programs are the major issue and UR long ago took itself out of that race by sticking to FCS football. The same thing is coming for basketball in my opinion. There will be 2 levels of D1 competition and UR will be in the second level. Mooney has already commented on this very thing recently. I don’t want to spend the time looking for the video, listening and marking it. This is one reason why I have to laugh at the “infusion of cash” plan that is be bantered about for next year. I suppose it comes down to it is easy to spend other people’s money. All I know is there won’t be any of my money involved in this fiasco. Good luck to all buying tickets for the MooneyBall lottery.

I'm tired of the HM programs complaining about NIL imbalances. you've had all the advantages forever. mid majors have always had to pick from your scraps, as every good player would choose the HM offer. now you're upset because some HM's have more money than you do? too bad.

no matter how much money a program has, there'a budget. sorry Louisville can't manage theirs.

it's also the players ... which of course is 100% on Mooney.

he has had teams that win. obviously not nearly often enough but we did go 15-3 in conference just 2 years ago. it's not that his offense can't work, or even the switching defense. he needs better players.

like probably all of you, I'd like to move on. his back-to-back 5-13 seasons should be enough to make that happen if you're a serious program with expectations. and we are that based on our investment. but we're not moving on. CM gets another year. and I'll bet he wins ... as unpopular as that is right now.

if we're serious about bumping our NIL today, we're going to be substantially better next year ... despite the bare cupboard. we have 2 spots open and we should expect multiple transfers out. nobody returning other than AA deserves a raise. that means we have an absolute boatload to spend. probably more in this one year than even the highest NIL teams in the A10. find the right guys. they'll be out there. I expect 3 new starters not currently on our roster at a minimum.

a better coach might get more out of them, but end of the day it's still the Jimmy's and Joe's.

I am just so frustrated that it seems like Mooney is going to use NIL as an excuse or talk about this discrepancy between high majors and mid majors.

At this point, we’re not asking to beat Duke or Arizona. Heck, not even asking to be top of the A10 right now. Let’s take baby steps first. How about not losing to an 8-22 Loyola Chicago team? How about not blowing a 30 point lead to a mediocre Duquesne team? How about not having an 18-10 Q4 record the past 2 years and losing at home to teams like Charleston Southern and Marist? How much NIL do we need for those things to not happen? Let’s start there before we complain about the growing discrepancy in college athletics. It’s deflecting at its finest.

UR could easily afford to be at the top of the A10 in NIL. We have a top 25 endowment in the world! That said, I agree that it wouldnt matter with CM. We dont have everything in place to be a serious program. But the administration has a loser mentality. Poor leadership in the RC that accept excuses, a lack of accountability, and a lack of belief that UR can be a serious contender. They are wrong, and I think the attention that an exceptional basketball program would bring the university is well worth the investment.

I think you bring up fair points. I don’t think anyone is questioning that having more NIL makes it easier to get better players which makes it easier to win more games even with the same strategy. The fundamental issues are.

1. Just because we have more NIL, are we going to do a good job of identifying top talent that can succeed day 1 here and successfully recruit them. In other words are we going to maximize our NIL with successfully bringing in the most talented players we can.

2. It doesn’t ignore fundamental aspects of our offensive/defensive schemes that other teams have exploited. Teams have figured out or offense. Teams have figured out how to create mismatches on our defense. We can have the most talented players, but they’re still playing under a system implemented by a coach. For instance, Mooney loves having smaller guards. We have had some excellent smaller guards over the years. We can have the greatest guards in the country but if we get exploited defensively where a 5’10” guard is defending a 6’10” PF who has 100 more lbs on him, we are not going to be good.

Agree with sman, unfortunately if we are able to buy better players Mooney can win. I just dont think he will win commiserate with whatever the talent level will be. And "winning" will include a bad schedule. But it will allow Hardt to just smirk and keep doing nothing.

We're going to go to $5 million just as SLU goes to $8 million in order to try to keep Schertz, and watch VCU and Dayton follow them.

right. not saying we'll win the A10. but we'll win 18-20 games with a bad OOC schedule.
