Game Thread - JMU Scrimmage @ RC - Sat 10/25 6pm

Walz needs to be assertive this year. I pulled some numbers last season on his fouling. His fouls per 40 was not more than our other players, but it seems like that to me too, that he is always in foul trouble.
Agree. Said this last year and will say again this season. There’s no reason he can’t avg 12-15 points a game. I think last year averaged around 7????? He’s always been hesitant or too unselfish. Needs to 1) take his shot when it’s there and not look for one more pass and 2) just shoot more period.

Walz was the best passer on the team last year, our guards were not good at passing (Hunt was decent.) Hopefully this year we have some guards that can pass and free up Walz to spend more time looking to score inside instead of running the offense on every possession. Not getting my hopes up based on the box score though

My observations:
1. JRob was our best player last night
2. Argabright looked very capable
3. I don’t understand why Colin is starting
4. 3pt shooting was poor
5. Our D is going to once again regularly find itself in mismatches
6. Beagle still has small hands

succinct and agree with the positive and sadly agree with the negative too

Thanks to everyone who provided the details. Reading this was way better than just looking at the box score. Great to hear how well Jaylen and Aiden played. And, even though Tyne might have banked a coulple 3s in, he still made 2 others, so 4-5 is solid, with banked in ones or not. I guess Bryson won't be a factor, but maybe if Jaylen can be really good, it will end up better having one of them being really good instead of both just being average. I wasn't expecting much from Tanner, so nice to see Lopez showing some good things. We need more from Johnston and Walz. They need to be the guys we can count on every night.

so I'm guessing AP would have started if available. Daughtry isn't there yet.
so instead we went small. if we're going to play that small, somebody small has to hit shots ... and not banked 3's.
otherwise go bigger.

so it sounds to me like JRob is ready to take that spot if AP isn't ready game 1 ... and maybe even if he is. no kid gloves for JRob. sink or swim. throw him in the deep end. we may have a beast there.

Did AP play in the secret scrimmage? Confused now as my mind is battling the fake vs real reports.

Thanks Sman! And guessing from your post above that he was playing the "4" spot as us ol timer numbered position guys call it? I know you were not there, but that seems to be the assumption?

Crazy. Mooney thinks he is smarter than he really is. He should be giving Bryson big minutes to help accelerate his HS recruits protocol. But instead he is prioritizing transfers and going against his ideals. But when u have multiple million contract with no accountability u can pull this absolute BS. Screw Mooney.
I guess this was the focus of the rant on the Spiders Sound Off podcast? Oh well. I will go down with the ship that McGlothin should have been getting minutes last year and should be more ready now. And yes, please at least allow him one or two mistakes in an exhibition. I still see a good Bryson on the wing as our highest ceiling team. But Mooney keeps perpetuating the idea to everyone and Bryson that he is not ready. Get him ready!
As of now it seems 3 of our top 6 players may be AP, Jrob, and Daughtry when all healthy. I don't see Mooney finding a way to make a rotation work with all 3 getting good minutes.

yeah my main comment during the game that triggered yours was the 30 second freshman standard hook that occurred after the turnover for McGlothin. It is one of my least favorite things that occurs by our current coach. I think it has gotten some of our players a complex in their early years since they knew that any single turnover they were coming up for at least the half and perhaps even the game.

Yep, im all for playing these to win the game, but this is exactly the player you need to let work through a mistake or two. And the quick hook in the past is very selective and a "star" or lack of star power type of rating. There were certain players that could be turn over prone in the past, and Mooney just covered his mouth and left them in.

But alas, Bryson may not get much opportunity this season. Not sure of his lateral foot speed, but already have reports that AJ and Tanner's D has looked suspect.

I couldn’t make the connection when I listened to the podcast, but you did go off the deep end when making that particular comment. But years of frustration will do that to a person.

I did some deep digging in the post-game video edits and found the following:
“I forgot it was an exhibition. You know we typically haven’t had exhibitions in the past…..” - Chris Mooney /s

I saw that comment too. well, Anyway hopefully we are a little better prepared for the upcoming gauntlet (/s) having played this exhibition in plain sight.

McGlothlin better play this year
Not sure I can agree with that. Heck, I was saying start him as a true freshman because I thought he could be a Tyler type who was ready to play right away. But, if he is not one of our better options and others are ahead of him AND we are winnning, no reason to say he better play. But, if we struggle to win like we did last year, and guys in front of him are not getting it done, I guess we should consider giving him some good minutes and see what we have. But, if he is another GW3 who is not an A-10 level player ( I'm not giving up on him and saying he is), don't play him just to play him.

My thoughts on the quick hook are it could be something that is stressed in practice over and over, either something that needs to be done and it's not done, or the other way around, so when you stress it over and over and then it happens in a game right away, I understand the quick hook. And, it makes sense that starters, your best players and the ones you heavily count on, won't get a quick hook.

This was a simple turn over due to nerves in my opinion. He got a pass, tried to make a quick move, lost his footing and then the ball. I guess he could be turnover prone in practice, but it sure seemed like game day jitters which should be what an exhibition can help a player get past.
