it's just a strange hypothetical for anyone to propose someone walking away from a head coaching job and possibly $4M+ on the table ... unless there were extenuating circumstances. nobody would do that.

say what you want about him, but I'm sure CM feels he's the right guy and can right the ship. he's not quitting.

I agree sman! Tho I have read a lot on here about Mooney moving to another role in AD office or something to that effect.

I'm sorry I replied to someone else's hypothetical and confused you.

Cool your jets until the end of the 27-28 season, and at that point he will have been extended behind the scenes until 30-31 for recruiting purposes.

Maybe I didn’t explain my thoughts well but my perspective is I just don’t see UR deviating from a lifelong history of not terminating a coach’s contract early, and starting now especially with Mooney who built a lot of favor with our admin over the last 20 years. Would most business view this as purely business like and cut their losses when things are clearly heading in the wrong direction and not be afraid to hurt people’s feelings? Absolutely. We do not operate as most business/athletic departments though.

So my hypothetical tries to reconcile the fact that our admin may in fact want a coaching change but also wants to save face in some ways and also be respectful about how to approach it. I don’t think we should be embarrassing Mooney like the VCU AD embarrassed the women’s bball coaching by firing her a month before the season is over.

All this could be for not. Perhaps PQ still believes that Mooney is the guy, despite our results 3 of these past 4 years, and we’ll just have to wait it out until 2028-2029. But at that point, if we continue the trajectory we’re on now, there will be more fans at our club quidditch games than basketball.

A move has long been overdue in my opinion. I was done after the failure in the NIT when we played Miami. I believe we were leading by 20 points or something like that. And we couldn’t hold the lead.

Were you at that game? The only game I took my girlfriend (now wife) to while we were at Richmond. I finally convinced her to go because it was a big game and we were so good. I can’t ever forgive Mooney for embarrassing me like that in front of my girl

I don’t totally agree, lots of factors can push someone to do something against their financial interests. Happens all the time. Physical health and mental health are big ones, both of which could be in play in his particular case.

I also think you could be giving him too much credit that he thinks he’s the guy. Lots of signals in his demeanor and comms that he’s struggling to adapt to the new normal. That alone could be a reason to eject. He doesn’t need the money.

My guess is if we don't make any noise in the A-10 tourney, he will be done. Not fired, but done. It shouldn't be that hard for the financial stuff to be worked out.

Here is a graceful out for Coach and the University that has been used by several coaches in basketball and football (as recently as today by Bobby Hauck, Montana head FB coach)

"Today, I am retiring as MBB coach because I feel the rapid professionalized changes in college athletics - specifically the NIL and transfer portal -make me no longer the right person to lead the program. " (Tony Bennett's words as I recall)

Hook him up with a desk job in AD's Office to make the money right for him and move on to the next chapter of Spider basketball.

will the # 1 reason be because he's the worst rivalry coach of all time?

I did the math. If the record for Bruce Weber vs Kansas that was posted is accurate, moon may have to settle for 2nd place. Still an impressive feat considering all the coaches that have cycled thru VCU during that time.

I don’t know why a bunch of posts thinking this year might be it for CM. As much as I want to get on board with that optimism, I think it’s more wishful thinking than something that actually plays out. We on this forum can make all the logical reasoning and justification, but it’s Moon and pals that must buy in. My gut tells me we’ll have another thread next year at the same time discussing this again. Plz let me be wrong.

Come on 23, get lost. One of your worst posts. It’s not simply the record. There’s a formula, it’s just secret like the NET. Again Weber was fired in half the tenure. That matters. K state & KU always in same conf, moon had conf advantage over vcu & did zip with it. Also Moon gets blown out regularly vs vcu. 15+ points margin average. Insane. Weber probably got blown out a bunch but I’d take the bet not as bad as Moon. Kansas is 1 of the all time blue bloods in all of college bball historical institutional advantages to that. It’s not vcu Richmond that should be more equal. But u r right about the cycling of coaches thing too. Vcu on 7th with Moon they all punk him. Weber faced who Self maybe 1 other idk. Max 2. Just 1 of many many factors.

I have higher expectations for u 23.

I always thought Ivy. same set up, I think. I don't think Ivy pays NIL.
I'm not sure about that. I heard an interview with a coach recently, and he specifically mentioned even having to outbid Harvard and Yale for players :). Now, he could have just been making a joke about it - but seemed to be just a fact he was mentioning.
