Game Thread - A10 Semifinals vs @GMU - Sat 3/7 1:30 PM CBS Sports Network

Terrible outcome. Sort of surprised that the team wasn’t ready for the physical play. Kind of reminded me of a Mooney team today.

Unfortunately the team doesn’t have the same profile as last year, so the likely bid is the NIT. Obviously not the goal and I feel terrible for the seniors. Playing more games would be a good thing for the team in general and hopefully the team can embrace it.

Of course, I will hope for a miracle. Go Spiders!

Rough day at the office today as not a lot went well. Reality is we weren't the same team late in the season as we were mid-season. The DC trip exposed a few things and we never really got fully back!

Maggie especially never seemed to get all the way back. Greatest player in UR history and a real warrior for us, but she wasn't the same player down the stretch and especially today. We ask so very, very much of her that it is a real grind for her both physically and mentally. She is the only real creator on offense and as a result we run everything through her virtually every possession and she is forced to take the physical grind of having to be our primary low post player, our primary creator with the ball and our primary shooter running off screens etc. Rachel is a totally complementary player who does no real creating and no ball handling to speak of. Ally has tried to become more of a creator and take on more responsibility, but just hasn't been enough to really relieve Maggie much. Maggie gets no possessions off at all. Add to that that she is forced to be our primary rebounder (in part because Dewey and Simon just never came on in this role) and our primary post defender. Plus she is really our only physical player so she has to be our answer in physical games and its a ton of hard, physical work and I think it really showed the last few weeks. I think we really saw how valuable Addie B. was because she took the rebounding, defending and lead physical roles on which significantly lightened Maggie's overall load. We just never found anyone stepping into those roles this year. Dewey shot it better as season wore on, but she isn't really a physical player and neither she nor Simon ever became a significant rebounding help.

I'll hold out hope for the bid, but chances are slim at best in my mind (although the entire bubble has had a rough week). Assuming we get to NIT, I'd hope to see some of the non-Seniors get some extra minutes for Maggie and Rachel as we ease our way into the rough transition ahead!

If GMU soundly defeats Rhody tomorrow, we may have a chance. While we enjoyed berths in the NCAA tourney in 2024 and 2025, the NCAA started and supported a new tournament known as the WBIT. There is still a WNIT , but it appears the WBIT is now more sought after. WBIT is NCAA managed while WNIT is privately supported.

Yes, WBIT is now the consolation prize. WNIT is a pay-to-play third-rate tourney.
I obviously do not follow Women’s basketball close enough to have any idea what the tournaments are. Nice of the NCAA to make it inconsistent. Of course, the goal is always to play in the top National Tournament.

Thanks for the info.

I don’t watch Women’s basketball. Can I just blame the athletics department for underachieving basically? Lacrosse seems to be the only sport we are overachieving or reaching any type of goal.

One factor other than those Philly mentioned is number of games played. We’ve played 33 while Mason and URI have only played 31. So looking at the whole season there is perhaps more wear and tear on our players at the same point of the season.

While the loss yesterday is disappointing, to say UR WBB is underachieving is way off. As of today our team has a NET power rating of 37, putting us in the top 10 percent of D1 schools and among the top non power conference schools.

I’ll be honest, yesterday’s loss was a very disappointing way to end our season (so far). We have a future WNBA pick and player whose number will be retired and couldn’t win either a regular season or tournament title.

However, with that said. I am still incredibly proud of this team and what they’ve accomplished not only this year but raising the standard of our women’s program the past few years. The fact that I, like other fans, and the players themselves, are disappointed by a season where we finished with 25 wins speaks volumes to the tremendous job the coaching staff and players have done building this program.

I still give us a 10% chance of making the NCAAs. Many bubble teams also lost. We need to root for ND State to be SD State today in the finals. I think the fact we’ve gone ourselves the reputation as one of the premier mid major teams, have Doogan, and recent success in NCAAs can be enough for the committee to give us the benefit of the doubt and put us in the play in game.

A mid-major with a 37 rating should be an at-large selection. But the system is so skewed toward the power conferences, I won't be surprised if we don't make it.

They'll say we "needed to win more games" while letting in a P4 team with 15 or 16 losses.

I agree with the announcers even though it could be a moot point either way. If George Mason wins, I think Rhode Island would have a better case for an at large than us. We need as many teams on the bubble to lose. So my rooting interest is Rhode Island to beat Mason and NDSU to beat SDSU

Unfortunately SDSU is going to win. I would have to think NDSU is in over us even though they’re lower in NET but not by much. They also have a quad 1 victory when we don’t. I can also see the committee putting 2 mid majors as the last four in and having us play NDSU in the first four.
