According to Goodman. 6'5" guard out of Penn State with two years of eligibility. Started 24 games this year and averaged 22.5 minutes and 6.6 points.

Not a fantastic shooter at 40.1% overall and 34.8% from deep, but apparently a good perimeter defender.

“He's our most physical perimeter defender, and with his length and how he could cover ground,” Rhoades said on March 2. “With the experience and getting all the reps guarding good players, he's getting better and better guarding and defending and understanding how to guard different players, honoring the scouting report."

Fits the profile of what an A-10 team should be looking for in the portal. I am sure Mooney got good intel on this player from Rhodes.

I’m having a real hard time getting too excited about these thrown together draft style teams. We will see if Mooney and staff can craft a cohesive team in short order or not. Will the third time be the charm?

Agree, last season the Belmont game seemed to be proof of concept of bombs away with a bunch of good 3 point shooters. Then he reverted to the norm in conference play. Still want another athletic 3/4 type.
 
I like this pick up a lot and think is a much needed addition to a position we need depth in. I read in his Penn State page bio that he was the #33 combo guard in his class in the country. This blend of offense and defense with good numbers and meaningful minutes at the Big 10 should translate well.

Penn State being a bad team is irrelevant in my eyes. He played all 32 games and started 24 of them. Averaged 6.6 ppg, played 22.5 minutes per game, had a 35% 3 point shooting and 80% free throw shooting percentage. Those are really solid stats for a sophomore playing against the best competition in the country.

What I like about Stewart and Kaiser is that not only did they play meaningful minutes as starters at a power conference level, but able to produce both offensively and defensively as well. Different than GW3 and AP that got no playing time so we were hoping they would be good by name alone.

Great job to our staff! We have 2 scholarships left (if reports of Jrob transferring are accurate). I imagine the last 2 guys will be role player kind of guys which is totally fine. Maybe a grad senior who can provide some depth at the 5 would be good.
 
I think folks know that I am a PSU fan as well. Wish I could give intel on this guy but the team was so pathetically awful last year, I really couldn't follow them closely, so take this for what it is worth. First of all, the ENTIRE team transferred after Rhoades foolishly tried to like Mooney to build a team of high school players in the portal era, which blew up spectacularly in his face.

The team was constantly playing a men against boys game because of Rhoades decision, so it is tough to discern anything from stats. I do love that Rhoades singled him out for his defense.

Here is the quote. “He's our most physical perimeter defender, and with his length and how he could cover ground". And as we saw in the tournament, the Big 10 was the best basketball conference this year, so he was guarding stud players night in and night out.

Rhoades plays a havoc-steal heavy type of defense that places a lot of pressure on the ball. We need that type of player and at 6'5, also really needed that type of height as our SG to play with AA. Now, can he shoot is the question? Only 34% from 3, which is not terrible, but also not great. Penn State two best guards and players both shot the 3 ball worse than him, so could be a result of just a terrible roster, no inside game, so he was guarded more tightly. He should have an easier time playing against A-10 guards than against Big 10 guards.

I think we found our starting 2 guard.

In fairness to Rhoades, I doubt PSU had much money to compete in the portal with those other Big Ten teams.

True, Penn State NIL was estimated to be about 3 million last year. Top Big 10 team was Michigan at 10.5 million. So yeah, they were on the low end, but lots of examples of teams with lower NIL's still achieving. Penn State was arguably the worst P5 team last year.

True. 3-17 Big Ten is really bad, so I hear u.
 
Even being on the worst team in the Big 10, he was a starter most games and played 20+ minutes against the best competition in the country. That is legitimate game experience that should translate to even greater production at the A10 level. His defense is what I’m most excited about and still has some decent scoring production with multiple double digit performances. He fits that combo guard that I was asking for really well.

Agree 100%. I am really liking this addition. We were talking about Rhoades( who I think is a good coach despite the 3-17 Big Ten season), and not Stewart ( who I think is a great fit for us).
