Did Ball De-Committ?

Assistant coach
Just curious because the McCaffery announcement states:
"McCaffery is the third member of Richmond's 2026 transfer class, joining Jamie Kaiser Jr. and Amon Dörries."

My first assumption is that our NAIA level basketball staff and Jabba the Hardt led staff pooped their pants again.

But it would make sense if he did back out due to another playe same size position?????

I'll assume its just the normal error filled PR squad at work here.

Also, does not look like Ball announcement on the official site, though sometimes hard to tell from my phone.

No mention of a de-commit anywhere but I also couldn’t find the transfer announcement on richmondspiders.com when the other three are all on there.

Strange.

And I was just starting to think we may be ok on our depth inside. As of now low athleticism inside. Really like Mccaffery upside, but not sure how he will defend and rebound? And we know Dorries is not strong in those areas.

Happy Wednesday!!

While I wouldn’t put it past our marketing team to miss this or make a mistake, I think the most likely explanation is that while Ball announced via social media his commitment, he has not officially signed anything yet.

Now, why he didn’t sign anything when the previous transfers signed later the same day it was announced they were coming here, I don’t know. Perhaps he got another offer last minute and wanted to see the campus and then he saw Jack signed here. Who knows.

That is one theory I have: He knew how wide open the PF situation was, and then we signed a pedigreed former top 100 player and paused.

I think it depends on what his goals are. Is it to get the most playing time, play at the highest level, get the best degree, make the most money? I have to imagine we’re the best landing spot that is the best balance of all of those things.

As great as Mccafrey might be, we have to remember he only has played 9 games of college level basketball and may still need time to catch up to game level competition. Plus we are very thin at the PF spot so even if McCaffrey did play a good amount, I would imagine that Ball would still get very meaningful minutes.

Agree, there is plenty opportunity here for Ball. Just wondering if one of the sides cooled off. Just odd considering the posted pictures of him in Spiders uni and agent's announcement. Of course we have seen this type of thing occuring like crazy if you follow the greater college basketball player movement.

Another thought is that we may have rescinded the offer, at least momentarily, as we explore other options. I don’t know how the world of college recruiting works but I imagine it’s fast paced and you can’t wait on someone forever. Probably send multiple offers for the same spot too. Maybe we landed our top guy in McCaffrey after Ball verbally announced his commitment and we felt that we didn’t need both him and Ball in that position. Still, I think this theory is more of a stretch because we need more depth in that position, especially now with JRob - supposedly - transferring.

I think there's no chance this is it.
you'd never recind an offer without cause. would destroy your reputation.

I agree. I was just looking at all the possibilities. The most likely explanation is that he hasn’t chosen to sign yet for one reason or another and now that McCaffrey has signed, he may want to think about it more/explore other options before signing.

Hmmm, the wording is:

He is the fourth member of Richmond's 2026 transfer class, joining Jamie Kaiser Jr., Amon Dörries, and Jack McCaffery.

So possibly they wanted to confirm he was graduating and would be a grad transfer, or the details of his NIL were being worked out. Interesting timing considering the tweet a few days back.
