According to the Athletic, here are the NIL budgets of all the teams in the sweet 16 this year, even VCU and SLU would need to double their NIL budgets to compete:

Duke $25.247M

Illinois
$18.970M
UConn $18.906M
Michigan State $17.106M
St. John's $16.650M
Arizona $16.317M

Michigan
$15.739M
Alabama $15.327M

Texas
$15.116M
Arkansas $15.025M
Tennessee $14.123M
Purdue $12.906M
Houston $12.552M
Nebraska $12.206M

Iowa
$11.425M
Iowa State $9.808M

What is the point this is trying to prove? No one is questioning that more money can help programs but fact of the matter is a lot those programs have fantastic coaches and great basketball history . So a lot of money + great basketball history + great coaching = success.

Houston has the smallest of the NIL and they were national finalist last year, made the final four a few years ago, and a good shot at making it again. Kentucky had an NIL budget of $22 million and lost in the 2nd round after needing a miracle shot to go into OT against a Santa Clara team with $2 million NIL budget.

Our team severely underperformed even with a $2 million budget and I don’t think giving our coach who is probably going to keep doing things the same way with the same staff, is going to do anything significantly better.

I wonder how many teams total are over $15.5 M

Did I just read this is total expenses including coach’s salary ?

Why would anyone want to watch the NCAA men's tournament? It's not fun if it's restricted to the P4 conferences. Almost none of these current players are going to play in the NBA. Most will be washed out, strung out and broke in 2 years.

I think the quality of play has actually been a lot better in the tournament because you have guys like Karaban at UConn who stayed and got paid mixed in with freshman phenoms like Boozer at Duke and of course the infusion of many experienced foreign players (not sure why Mooney hasn’t embraced this route). The second weekend of the tournament has really never been about the mid-major Cinderella (with a few notable exceptions). Of course VCU proved once again that you can see a mid major take down the bluest of blue bloods in UNC.

There's nothing like the NCAA tournament.

How many teams not currently in the P4 and big east, have made the the final four in the last 25 (including this one) tournaments? So out of 100 teams…

If you want to include Gonzaga then 10. 10% of the teams outside of P4/Big East have made the final four the past 25 years.

8 programs, but 10 teams.

Gonzaga for this year but not next year, Butler at the time but not now.

At most 10 at least 6, out of 100…

And of course you have to do it on the court but the covid shutdown year you had Dayton and SDSU both in the top 5 nationally. Playing field definitely more even back then. Would love to see a rule where one time transfer can play right away, then next one sit a year (barring coaching change), but will never happen.
