Checking in on the Flagship

Taking on water. But next year we start the clock on building through HS recruits. Until then just keep the buckets scooping and try to keep from drowning.

The men’s flagship hasn’t started its season yet. It has had 2 quality scrimmages and is looking to continue on its strong play and NCAA tournament appearance last season. Please read the last Forum section under UR Sports.

If you are interested in the sport with the ball and hoop, please follow the women’s team.

(This is the messaging I am receiving from the Athletic Department).

Never claim on the BB board to have any knowledge, but from the FB board one would have to ask if the NIL percentages might drift more to WBB to keep the interest there.

Certainly, keeping the coaching talent at the level, it is for WBB might justify a level of payment that insures retention. I honestly may be way off base since I do not know the level now or how it compares, but some mid-level to bottom feeder school in a major conference will come calling with deep pockets if this success continues. This coach has already turned two programs around.

FB had Dave Clawson and it did not take long for them to come calling. Clawson as far as I know is still the only HC to have 10-win seasons at 4 different D-1 schools and he got to each school when FB needed turning around as he moved up the line to stronger conferences and levels.

Is Russell the Clawson of WBB I do not know, but he has a start along the path. If the Athletic Department is sending that message about BB interest, they better be sure they pay the man. JMO of course from the outside looking in.

The pay for Roussell is not known since UR is a private school, but believed to be around $650k. The lower P4 schools are paying in the $1 mil range for a proven coach, so likely close to 2x his current pay. Matching the pay of the Men’s coach is very unlikely. The only way it could ever happen is if the Women’s program could match the Men’s in attendance and even with the junk OOC schedule the Men’s games are still outdrawing the Women’s by 2-2.5x.

We got to offer Roussell $1 million/yr after this season. Basketball is our flagship sport and we have an exceptional coach who is doing a phenomenal job. I’ve referenced trajectory a lot on the men’s side, but what about the women’s team? Fantastic scheduling, recruiting great high school players (we have a top 100 recruit next year), developing players really well that there has not been a rebuild year, have won 3 A10 titles in the last 2 years, 2 NCAA appearances and program’s first win, beating VCU 6x in a row and 8 of the last 10, have a likely WNBA player, and growing attendance that is up there with Dayton as best in A10.

I don’t care how they get the money, pay this man what he deserves.
