About Lehigh

[Gallipoli]

Since the Lehigh game is right around the corner, we need to begin the discussion about our first opponent. Lehigh will be our season opener and will be our first Patriot League conference game. Lehigh returns a veteran team. It is almost the same team that beat us in the playoffs last season.
They have key skill players returning on offense, including:

- Luke Yoder (RB): 193 carries, 1,014 rushing yards, 5.3 YPC, 10 rushing TDs
- Jaden Green (RB): 143 carries, 777 rushing yards, 5.4 YPC, 10 rushing TDs, 553 kick return yards
- Geoffrey Jamiel (WR): 60 receptions, 768 receiving yards, 12.8 YPC, 8 receiving TDs

Hayden Johnson was their QB against us. He was inconsistent last year. We can expect improvement by him this season.

We can expect a balanced attack by the offense.

Their QB, Hayden Johnson, is a rising Sophomore. He won the starting job about halfway through the season last year. He is expected to improve substantially this season. He will be joined by Yoder and Green, of the two Yoder is the workhorse. They make a very good 1-2 tandem. We are going to have our hands full with this team.

Maybe we thought we would walk all over Lehigh, coming off an emotional win to cap an emotional season. Maybe we thought we deserved a 1st round bye. Even maybe the acrimony between the coaches affected the players. We had a good team and everyone thought we were going to make a deep run in the playoffs.

We had 10-12 starters that were planning to hit the transfer portal ASAP.Minds had already been made up.The locker room knew it.Think there was overall disappointment that we ended up in the 9 slot rather than an 8 seed(bye).

I hope Wickersham surprises people throwing the ball with accuracy this year. Spiders had to many dropped balls last year and to many missed open WRs. Let's see how this group of WRs develops and gets open. I hope with the accuracy you describe above, Wickersham can drive the ball down the field in a balanced way.
The offense I think should produce yards (I do not care if on the ground or through the air), but if they do not score TDs rather than kick FGs like last year after long drives, they could struggle, IMO.

Do we run an RPO offense? Last year it looked like Wickersham tucked the ball and ran it too often, which got him in trouble. Also his slow release was a problem. Coleman's release was very fast. My concern is that Wickersham tucks the ball and runs it too soon or if he runs too many designed plays, 1) we will be forced into 3rd and long and/or 2) Wickersham will get injured.

If we run the QB run plays too many times, I expect Wickersham to get injured early in the season.

We had such a good kicker last year, Huesman may have been over dependent on settling for the FG.

Unclear in mid-August is the primary manner in which the Spiders will operate on offense. Jacob Huesman is the first-year play-caller. Richmond’s offensive strength appears to be the run game, with Wickersham very involved. It’s a style of play that Huesman knows well.

Wickersham is aware that he needs to stay in games, but running is obviously still going to be a big part of what he does.
