Mojo-Spider
Walk-on
I think I may have been a "mushhead"!
when I read this game against Georgetown would be played on Cooper Field in Washington, the first thing I thought of was former UR President Dr. William E. Cooper...President Cooper may be best remembered by many Spiders' fans for not only hanging the "mushheads" tag on some UR students and alums, but also being the first to suggest that Richmond become a member of the Patriot League...he has to be grinning somewhere!
alas, Cooper Field at Georgetown is not named after Dr. Cooper...another Cooper made the venue possible...in a piece of NCAA D-I trivia Cooper Field is the smallest venue in D-I football...
the Hoyas came to the Patriot League in 2001...they have only had one winning season (2011)...Georgetown is the last Patriot League athletic scholarship holdout...they still do not offer scholarships specifically for athletics, but use several other avenues to meet the financial needs of their athletes...their football budget is roughly half of the Patriot League's biggest spenders...
Coach Rob Sgarlata enters his 11th season at the helm of the program...he's hoping he can find a QB to go along with several talented skill position players from 2024's 5-6, 2-4 PL season...the Hoyas offensive line has been described as young with potential...GU's defense took heavy graduation losses and will be in rebuidling mode...
Georgetown was picked to finish 6th in the Patriot preseason poll in front of only Colgate and Fordham...
if the Spiders are still in the PL Championship battle, winning this second game of "Championship November" is a must!
enjoy the Countdown...
in the spirit of all "mushheads" Go Spiders!
